In The Name Of Nelson Mandela
A private security company, Base 5 Guard added its weight to voluntary work to mark the Mandela Day in Soweto. Young children and elderly people were bestowed with blankets, food parcels and hot soup to banish the effects of the cold weather. Entertainment was galore.
The event coordinator, Mpho Moshimane says this is his father’s idea to give back to the community. “My father (Sello Moshimane) took after his mother who had interests of the elderly at heart. We usually host year-end, Mother’s Day and other themed events for the old people,” says Mpho.
President Nelson Mandela was born on 18 July 1918 in Mvezo, in the Eastern Cape. He bought house number 8115, corner Vilakazi & Ngakane streets in Orlando West. He served 67 years in jail for defying the apartheid regime. He died on 5 December 2013 at his other house in Houghton, Johannesburg.
The duration of the 67 Minutes of voluntary work is the metaphoric of the years that Madiba was involved in human rights activism.
