LGBTI: Reclaiming the pride
Despite last year’s flop, the 12th Soweto Pride was relatively successful. “The last year’s challenges included security concerns from the municipality and about R136 000 that the organizers were asked to pay for law enforcement. We did not have such money,” says Phindi Malaza. She is the programs manager.
The event was called off three weeks before the D-Day. “We attract people from across the country and beyond. Some booked accommodation and flights to get here, and they had to cancel,” she laments. She alludes that the 2017 Soweto Pride could have been bigger than it was. Some people were sceptical.
This year’s theme was, Reclaiming Our Right To Organise. Phindile says, “The idea was to raise awareness in community on violation experienced by LGBTI people, and to increase their visibility.” They also cleaned the streets.
