Bro Hugh Masekela Fixes White “Zulu Girl’s” Teeth

Maritjie Bothma’s beaming smile will surely remind her of the worthy relationship she had with the internationally acclaimed trumpeter, Bro Hugh Masekela. Bro Hugh succumbed to prostate cancer on the 23rd of January, 2017.

On the play, Gone Native, Maritjie was playing a character of a white woman called Regina Brooks, who wanted to be classified as ‘coloured’ so that she could live with her black partner and their daughter in the 50’s. The apartheid forbade inter-racial marriages. Hugh Masekela was the musical director of the play.

Maritjie’s teeth were bad and Regina had beautiful teeth. “Bra Hugh said that he wanted to fix my teeth so that I could fit the character perfectly, and so that I could rebuild who I am,” she reveals. She grew up on the streets and did not have money to fix her teeth.

She was shot to prominence after she was featured on a television pie advert. She stunned the audience with her fluent Zulu. She speaks good Sesotho as well.
