Winning primary school soccer team represent SA in Spain

Nomalinganiselo Primary School soccer team will represent South Africa in Spain next year. The Cape Town school were crowned Danone Nations Cup champions at Dobsonville Stadium in Soweto. They were coached by their school teacher, Ntokozo Mazwi. The national champs beat Charles Morkel Primary School from the Eastern Cape 5-4 in penalties.

“Some of these children have never been outside of their home towns. It will be an honour for them to be in a different country where people even speak different languages. They are going to meet school teams from other 31 countries in Barcelona,” says Shawn Bellyigi from the sponsoring brand, Danone.

About 3500 school soccer teams participated in the competition this year (2018). The kick-off started in February at the region, provincial and lastly at the national level in September.  The South African School Football Association and (SASFA) and the Department of Basic Education facilitate the games.

The tournament is the brainchild of French legendary soccerite Zinedine Zidane, who continues to be the ambassador. Shawn Bellyigi from Danone says among the match attendees, there are usually scouts from local big teams. “The national Under 17 soccer player, Xolani Muleya is the product of this Under 12 Nations Cup Soccer Tournament,” says Bellyigi.
